July 31–Aug 2 – NASA Western States Championships– MRLS

I was worried about attending this event, despite the fact that it is invitation only, and I got invited. It is, as the name implies, a championship race. NASA used to hold National Championships, but they noticed that when they were on the East Coast, people form western states didn’t attend and vice versa. So, this was pretty much the equivalent of the National Championships, but for West Coast people.

But, my worry was for naught. Two days of qualifying, and Sunday was race day. Mostly, everything went well, although on one lap exiting turn 5, someone forced me off track and I ended up spinning into the kitty litter. I couldn’t get out without help, so I had to wait for a tow. It was the first time I had ever needed the safety crew, and I’m glad it wasn’t any more serious. It took them about 4 laps to get there. Once they found out I was OK, they pulled me out and I was able to finish the race. I came in 5th. If I hadn’t spent 4 laps in the sand, it would have been 4th. Oh well.

It was my first major race, and I had survived - dare I say... done OK?
